Set Up the Shopify ID Column in Airtable

Set up the Shopify ID column for Shopify-Airtable syncs. Use the required Airtable number field, match its name, and update legacy infinity-symbol fields.

Set Up the Shopify ID Column in Airtable

Shopify assigns a unique numeric ID to each product, variant, order, customer, and other record. The ID tells a sync which Shopify record belongs to each Airtable row.

If the ID column is missing, named differently, or configured with the wrong Airtable field type, the sync cannot reliably match records. Downloads can fail, and Airtable to Shopify runs can treat an existing Airtable row as a new record to create.

AirPower stores these IDs in one consistently named column across the Airtable tables used by a Sync. New Syncs use Shopify Id by default.

Shopify ID column requirements

Use the same column setup in every mapped Airtable table.

Column name
The name must exactly match Shopify ID column in Airtable under Connections → Advanced settings. New Syncs default to Shopify Id.

Airtable field type
Set the field type to Number. Set the precision to 0 decimal places.

Column values
Keep one Shopify ID per row. Do not use text, formula, linked-record, lookup, or decimal fields for this column.

Set up the column for a new Sync

Check the configured name before mapping Airtable tables.

  1. Open or create a Sync
  2. Select the Airtable base under Connections
  3. Open Advanced settings under Connections
  4. Confirm that Shopify ID column in Airtable is set to Shopify Id
  5. Create a Shopify Id field in every Airtable table used by the Sync
  6. Set each field type to Number
  7. Set each field precision to 0 decimal places
  8. Return to the Sync editor
  9. Click Reload tables and columns
  10. Click Save Sync

If the app creates a missing Airtable table, it adds the Shopify ID column with the correct field type and precision.

About the infinity symbol

Older templates and saved Syncs may use ∞ Shopify Id. New Syncs do not require the infinity symbol.

A legacy name can continue to work when the Airtable column and Shopify ID column in Airtable setting match exactly. Do not rename a working column in Airtable without updating the Sync setting at the same time.

To replace the legacy name:

  1. Pause every Sync that uses the affected Airtable tables
  2. Rename ∞ Shopify Id to Shopify Id in every mapped table
  3. Open each affected Sync
  4. Open Connections → Advanced settings
  5. Change Shopify ID column in Airtable to Shopify Id
  6. Click Reload tables and columns
  7. Click Save Sync
  8. Resume the affected Syncs

If multiple Syncs share the same tables, update all of them before resuming. Each Sync must point to the new column name.

How Shopify IDs affect records

Rows with a Shopify ID
The sync matches the row to an existing Shopify record. Airtable to Shopify runs update that record when the mapped data type supports updates.

Rows without a Shopify ID
An Airtable to Shopify run can create a new Shopify record when the mapped data type supports creation. After creation, the sync writes the new Shopify ID back to Airtable.

Do not clear the Shopify ID from an existing row. A later run may create a duplicate record when creation is supported.

What you’ll see after saving

The configured Shopify ID column appears in every mapped Airtable table. Shopify to Airtable downloads fill the column for imported records, and supported new records created from Airtable receive an ID after the run completes.

If an existing table has a valid integer Shopify ID column and no field mappings, the Sync editor can offer to set up its column mappings automatically.
