Set Up Shopify Metaobjects in Airtable: Tables and Steps

In Shopify, metaobjects store structured custom content outside standard objects like products and customers. Each metaobject definition has its own fields, and stores use them for size guides, ingredient lists, store locations, ratings, FAQ entries, and other reusable content.

Managing entries in the Shopify admin means opening a definition and editing its entries one at a time. There’s no view for reviewing or editing a full set at once.

AirPower syncs each metaobject definition to its own Airtable table. Entries become rows, with the definition’s fields as columns. Edit values, create new entries, and send the changes back to Shopify.

Available metaobject types

Each metaobject definition in your store appears in Add data, under Metaobjects, with its own name, such as Size guide. If your store has no metaobject definitions, the group doesn’t appear.

Definitions load when the sync’s page opens. After adding a definition in Shopify, reload the sync’s page to see it.

Bring entries into Airtable

1. On the dashboard, click Edit on your Shopify to Airtable sync
2. Click Add data
3. Under Metaobjects, click the definition, such as Size guide
4. Click Create a Metaobject - Size guide table, or pick one of your tables from Use a table
5. Click Save in the save bar

Each field of the definition is listed on the tab. Saving the sync downloads the entries.

After the first download, Shopify tells AirPower when an entry is created or changed, and the row updates. To download every entry again, click Settings, find Download data, and click Download next to Metaobjects.

Edit entries and send them to Shopify

1. On the dashboard, click Edit on your Airtable to Shopify sync
2. Click Add data, then the definition under Metaobjects
3. Pick the definition’s table from Use a table
4. Click Send from Airtable on the fields you want to send
5. Click Save in the save bar
6. Edit the rows in Airtable
7. Click Sync now

AirPower updates each entry from its row. An empty cell is left out of the update, so that field keeps its current value in Shopify.

Create entries from Airtable

1. Add a row to the definition’s table
2. Fill in the fields, and leave the Shopify ID empty
3. Click Sync now on the Airtable to Shopify sync

AirPower creates the entry and writes its new Shopify ID back to the row. Send Handle too, so the entry gets a readable handle. Without one, AirPower names it metaobject- followed by the row’s Airtable ID.

What you’ll see after saving

After the download, the definition’s table has a row for each entry, with its Shopify ID. After an Airtable to Shopify run, your edits and new entries show in the Shopify admin under Content, then Metaobjects.
